In recent conversations with clients and colleagues, the idea of agency—our ability to make independent choices—has come up repeatedly. At the same time, I’ve noticed this topic cropping up across my media feeds. It raises an interesting question: Are these discussions organic, or are algorithms subtly shaping what we talk about? And if algorithms are guiding us, do we still have full agency?

As professionals, whether in real estate development, entrepreneurship, or tech, we like to believe that our decisions are driven by experience and insight. But the reality is that digital platforms influence what information we see, often reinforcing our existing views.

This creates both a challenge and an opportunity. On the one hand, it’s easy to fall into echo chambers. On the other, recognising this influence allows us to take back control, making more deliberate decisions based on diverse perspectives rather than just what the algorithm serves up.

So, how do we maintain our agency in a world where technology plays such a significant role in shaping our choices? By staying curious, seeking out alternative viewpoints, and being mindful of how digital tools are designed to influence us.

Have you noticed this in your own decision-making process?
